In 1 Corinthians 6:19-20, Paul gives us the reason why we should take care of ourselves: “Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.” By taking care of ourselves, we are glorifying God. Our bodies are not our own – they are the dwelling of God’s Spirit. So it’s crucial that we take care of God’s property. When we borrow something from a friend or neighbor, we usually take care of that thing better than if it were our own. We need to do the same with the bodies that God has allowed us to have. I don’t know about you but I would rather treat whatever is God’s better than what I would treat whatever is my neighbor’s.
Earlier, in 1 Corinthians 3:17, Paul says what will happen if we don’t take care of ourselves: “If anyone destroys God's temple, God will destroy him. For God's temple is holy, and you are that temple.” Stop eating that quarter pounder, get some good sleep, and go to the gym before God smites you! If that’s not a good enough reason for you, your problem might be pride and stubbornness. We’ll talk about those some other time.
At the end of the day we really need to take care of ourselves. Cast aside what is making us feel “good” in the moment and realize that we need to glorify God through not just our bodies, but in all things. The glorification of God should be our number one priority in absolutely everything we do in our lives. I promise you, in the long-run you will be happier and you will also have a bigger impact on the world and people around you if you do so.
Peace of Christ,
